Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MDE has waived admission testing requirements for entry into licensure programs. Therefore, passing scores on the Praxis Core and Praxis II are no longer required to begin the program. Participants will be able to obtain a 3-year provisional license once they successfully complete the licensure courses (EDCI 613 and EDCI 615) and meet one of the three criteria listed below under “Licensure in a Subject Area.” Once completing the program, participants will need to pass the Praxis Core and Praxis II testing requirements to obtain the 5-year regular license.
Licensure in a Subject Area*
Once completing the summer coursework, your 3-year license can be obtained by fulfilling ONE of the following:
Passing the Praxis II in the subject area
The subject area for licensure was your major
You have 18 hours in a particular subject area
*All of these are contingent on the potential areas of licensure allowed by MDE.
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Online Program
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) online program is a 36 hour alternate-route teacher certification program. Program participants are eligible to obtain a 3-year provisional Mississippi Educator License (which certifies them to teach grades 7-12 in Mississippi) after completing the first two courses. Program participants typically receive their Mississippi Educator License to teach in one or more of the following areas: math, English, science, and/or social studies. In addition, program participants can seek certification in other subjects (based on Mississippi Department of Education policies). Coursework focuses on providing the pedagogical knowledge and skills needed for secondary instruction to those with sufficient content knowledge.
The MAT program was recognized as being in the Top 50 Best Online Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction 2018.
